Q: Does this take protected cells? Otherwise putting them in parallel as in the picture means a fire hazard.

BG141249343 I don't think so. It's a close fit with unprotected ones. If the cells are relatively even in capacity and voltage there should be no hazard. You have to check the cells beforehand.

Q: This is a major fire hazard unless the cells you put in have protection circuits. Those in the image supplied don't. Is it even possible to have protected cells inside? Without balance charging, if one cell turns bad, using the battery will result in fire.

chocksaway Protected 18650 batteries are longer than unprotected cells. The longer cells WILL NOT fit in this unit.

Works well, and has some interesting features. Personally, I will run it exclusively in text mode, but the graphics mode seems neat.

This is a good product, easier to work with than ramps BUT, a large caveat that took a good while to figure out is that the AUX connectors are the wrong way around. You have to push in the cables the wrong way around, breaking the connector in the progress to get LCD screens to work.
