mzperxcalling there is a problem with the original drive:
speed of the original drive:
/dev/sda:
Timing O_DIRECT disk reads: 150 MB in 3.03 seconds = 49.53 MB/sec
speed of a secondary drive I added:

sudo hdparm -t --direct /dev/sdb
/dev/sdb:
Timing O_DIRECT disk reads: 1468 MB in 3.00 seconds = 489.13 MB/sec

as a comparison, the speed of an USB drive in the same device:
/dev/sdc:
Timing O_DIRECT disk reads: 426 MB in 3.00 seconds = 141.89 MB/sec
