Good product. Excellent datasheet for the MAX7219 controller making it fun writing your own library. Serial interface is pretty much SPI. Data is transferred in 16-bit words (8 bits register address + 8 bits register data). Since there are 4 devices chained together (one for each 8x8 matrix) it basically becomes a 64-bit shift register where each command word "trickle" down the chain. A no-op command is used to skip a device or to shift existing commands in the chain to the next device and to the next and so on. Have fun!
