This model of motor controller with the L298N chip is well suited for smaller robot project, without a big power consumption (ie many AMP's). For larger projects, a model with a heat sink should be used. This one is cheap and light weight and thus is a good choice for a mini robot. All in all a nice board, which appears to be of fair quality.

Note: the IC is MX1508 I was able to find only this datasheet in Chinese: http://sales.dzsc.com/486222.html Keep the power below 9.6V. Can be interfaced with 3.3V logic signals. You can use the input signal to control the motor speed with PWM at not very high frequencies.
